LEDs may last forever, but...

...not so the wires leading to the LEDs.

Galena has a Richie Navigator compass on her bulkhead in the cockpit. Good compass. But after only 5-months of exposure to the sea the LEDs that light the front edge of the compass card corroded away. So we were back to a top-reading card only.

I e-mailed Richie and they sold me a new LED for $20. Wiring it took a lot longer than I would like to admit. The way it's mounted, the wires have to go around the compass. So I had to shoot a leader through to pull the new wires from the front to the back. The leads to the LEDs an the new set were still bare. To protect them I packed the area with Vasoline. I'll repack it before I head out to sea next year. Hopefully that will keep the salt off the wires.
